Heres a list of not 6 but many traffic secrets. Really they are not secrets either, they are common knowledge to the best of the webmasters, but finding them all in one place is sometimes difficult. So, it is my new found mission to get all these "secrets" in one place and share them freely.
I don't know if you can tell, from this site, but I have only just started writing PHP, HTML and Java. I have been programming for decades but never really got in to HTML. But when you know the basics of a language you can pick up quickly other languages. Yeah, I'm still learning but I bet the best of you webmasters are still learning also.
There are probally loads more, but for now I have:
- Use Google Webmaster Tools to submit a sitemap - you could create a PHP page to list all pages found in the database.
- Get links, to and from, websites with a high page rank. Check Page Ranks Here
- Use meta-tags to best describe you site. Use a Keyword Suggestion Tool to see which keywords are most searched for.
- Use a descriptive title, different pages should always have a different title.
- Use unique content - don't just copy and paste someone elses site.
- Use bold text to highlight keywords, but don't use all bold.
- Don't use "Free Instant Traffic" or spiders, it's not real!
- Use Google Analytics to see which keywords are getting traffic to your site and update the ones which are not.
- Use text links instead of fancy picture links. If this isn't possible, make sure you use the IMG ALT tag.
- Don't use "hidden links". ie links that the user of your site cannot see. It makes your site appear dishonest.
- Use the robots.txt file to block pages that are dupilcate. For example a PHP page could have many variables in the URL like example.php?a=1 and example.php?a=1&add=true. These two could both point to the same page.
- Use a site text viewer like Lynx, to view you site as text. Similar to the way search engines view your page.
- Promote other pages on each page. To make it easy for the "good spiders", like GoogleBot, to crawl your site.
- Set up more than one website to link to each other. Like eBay and Paypal, were set up at the same time and look at how successful they have become. But try and keep it relevant to each other and it would preferable be better on different IP addresses.
- Set up 404 pages, by placing a html file called error404.html at the root of each directory. You could redirect the error404.html to a page with suggestions to help your user to get back on track. (But, make sure you send the Error 404 header)
- Put the location of your sitemap in your robots.txt file - "Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.php"
- Put sumething interactive on your site like a forum or games to keep your users returning
